Privacy policy
Orae has no advertising, no tracking and no third-party analytics. Without an account, your journal stays on your iPhone. If you create an account, your journal is also backed up to Orae's server so you can get it back on a new iPhone. We use that backup only to store and return it to you. We never sell or share it.
Without an account
Your recordings, transcripts, moods, symbols, chapters and artwork are stored only on your iPhone, protected by iOS file encryption. If you use iCloud Backup for your device, Apple includes them in that backup under your own Apple Account.
With an account
An account is optional. If you create one, Orae stores:
- your email address and a scrambled (hashed) form of your password, to sign you in;
- a copy of your journal: recordings, transcripts, moods, symbols, chapters, and the settings that draw your artwork.
The copy is kept in private storage on Vercel, our hosting provider, in the United States, sent over an encrypted connection and encrypted at rest. It is linked to your account and used only to back up your journal and restore it when you sign in. We don't read it, analyse it, or use it to train anything.
How the app is used
While Orae is in testing, it sends us a small record of how it is used: which screens you open, which buttons you tap, how many entries, recordings and chapters you have, and your iPhone model and iOS version. It is tied to a random id made when you install the app and, if you are signed in, to your account. It never includes your words, your recordings, the people you mention, or your chapter titles. Turn it off any time in Settings (the gear on Story) → share how you use orae. We use it only to find what is confusing and fix it.
Deleting
Delete an entry in the app and it is removed from your iPhone and, with an account, from your backup at the next sync. To delete your account and everything backed up to it, open the gear on Story → Account → Delete account. This takes effect immediately. The journal on your iPhone stays until you delete the app.
Speech to text
Transcription runs on your iPhone using Apple's on-device speech recognition. The first time you transcribe in a language, iOS downloads Apple's speech model for it; that download comes from Apple and contains nothing of yours.
Microphone
Orae uses the microphone only while you are recording an entry.
Importing
Text files you import or paste are read on your iPhone and saved as entries there. With an account, they are backed up like any other entry.
Children
Orae is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly create accounts for them.
